The two-year fellowships are available in any U.S. laboratory carrying out space-related biomedical or biotechnological research.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Through this program, recent doctoral graduates are able to conduct independent research projects while continuing to learn from experienced scientists serving as mentors,&quot; said Dr. David A. Watson, NSBRI senior scientist. &quot;Our goal is to inspire outstanding young scientists to pursue careers in space life sciences research to help enable long-duration human exploration of space.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Applicants are required to submit proposals with the support of a mentor and institution, and all proposals will be evaluated by a peer review panel. The program is open to U.S. citizens, permanent residents, or persons with pre-existing visas obtained through their sponsoring institutions that permit postdoctoral training for the project&#8217;s duration. Selected applicants receive a stipend, allowance for health insurance, and travel funds for related scientific meetings.<\/p>\n<p>Notices of intent are due July 7, 2009, and the application deadline is August 4.
