Announcements
NSBRI-RFA-15-02: Administering health care in space demands innovative biomedical solutions. Small companies developing products that can be modified for use in space may be eligible for a unique funding opportunity offered through the National Space Biomedical Research Institute (NSBRI).
NSBRI’s Industry Forum is soliciting applications for its Space Medical and Related Technologies Commercialization Assistance Program (SMARTCAP). SMARTCAP grants are used to accelerate the development of products meeting a need on Earth as well as in space. Current priorities include scientifically proven countermeasures to mitigate and/or protect healthy tissue from the adverse effects of radiation exposure. The BioShield4Mars grant should be used to support a new application of the countermeasure for an indication other than radiation protection in order to de-risk the investment.

NNJ15ZSA001N: The National Space Biomedical Research Institute (NSBRI) is soliciting for ground-based and analog definition research proposals to develop safe and effective countermeasures and technologies that will reduce the significant biomedical risks associated with human space travel. These discoveries will not only enable safe and productive human spaceflight, but will also have the potential to improve life on Earth.
This solicitation was released jointly with NASA’s Human Exploration Research Opportunities (HERO) NRA (NNJ15ZSA001N) on July 31, 2015.
The response area for the NSBRI solicitation is NNJ15ZSA001N-NSBRI (Appendix B) “NSBRI Research and Technology Development to Support Crew Health and Performance in Space Exploration Missions.”

NSBRI-RFA-14-01: Administering health care in space demands innovative biomedical solutions.
Current priorities include non-invasive approaches to assess brain and ocular health, diagnostic and therapeutic devices using ultrasound and other non-invasive modalities, and miniaturized mass spectrometry solutions.
SMARTCAP now accepts grant applications year-round, with reviews and awards made quarterly. To be considered during grant cycle one (January-April, 2014), the one- to two- page applications must be received no later than 5 p.m. central time, Feb. 13, 2014. Other grant cycle deadlines, submission guidelines and additional information regarding SMARTCAP can be found.

NSBRI-RFA-13-02: The National Space Biomedical Research Institute (NSBRI) is soliciting for program proposals to establish a Center for Space Radiation Research (CSRR). The CSRR will build upon important discoveries made by the NSBRI Center of Acute Radiation Research and extend them by characterizing and quantifying the effects of space radiation on living systems. Operating in close partnership with NASA’s Human Research Program, the CSRR will be tasked with researching the acute effects of space radiation, as well as the longer term, so-called “degenerative” effects of space radiation on the cardiovascular and circulatory systems. Accordingly, the CSRR will work to reduce the radiation related health risks that will be encountered by astronaut crews during future missions to an asteroid, the Moon or Mars. This research announcement entitled “Center for Space Radiation Research” was released by NSBRI on August 14, 2013.
